From Kris:
I have loved everything Japanese since I was a teenager in Canada. In high school I studied the Japanese language (but please don’t test me on it now!) which lead me to an interest in the history, culture and society of Japan. As with many teenage boys, I was fascinated by the Samurai of Japan. In 2019, I visited the land of the Rising Sun for the first time. That trip not only confirmed my love of all things Japanese but since then, it has also inspired my work on a number of occasions.
The inspiration behind this series of cocktails comes from the neon lights of Tokyo nightlife. Everywhere you look, the glow of the neon is reflected in the puddles that litter the streets. I was also influenced by the exactness in which the master bartenders of the city perfect their craft in the tiny back alley bars scattered throughout the Tokyo districts.
Liam Wong’s book TO:KY:OO was another inspiration for these images. I don’t often find inspiration in other’s photographer’s work but when I do, it takes my breath away.
